Management Monday: The Golden Rules of Falls Prevention

Falls are the single most common reason older Australians end up in hospital — and most are preventable. This Management Monday, our Registered Nurses share the golden rules we apply in every home we visit.

Rule 1: Treat the first fall as a warning, not bad luck

One fall roughly doubles the chance of another. The moment someone falls, it’s time for a review — of their health, their medications, and their environment — not a wait-and-see.

Rule 2: Look at the medications

Some of the biggest fall risks come from the medicine cabinet:

  • Sedatives and sleeping tablets
  • Blood pressure medications that cause dizziness on standing
  • Anything new that causes drowsiness

A nurse-led medication review, in partnership with the GP and pharmacist, is one of the highest-impact things we do.

Rule 3: Fix the environment

Most falls happen at home, doing ordinary things. The quick wins:

  • Clear walkways of cords, rugs and clutter
  • Light the path to the bathroom for night-time trips
  • Add grab rails in the bathroom and beside the bed
  • Keep everyday items within easy reach — no step stools

Rule 4: Keep them moving

It sounds counterintuitive, but rest is not the answer. Strength and balance decline fast when someone stops moving. Safe, regular activity — guided by the care team — keeps legs strong and confidence up.

The goal is never to wrap someone in cotton wool. It’s to keep them safely doing the things that make life worth living.

Rule 5: Manage the whole picture

Vision, footwear, blood pressure, continence, hydration and bone health all feed into falls risk. A single clinical assessment ties these threads together into one plan.

How we help

Our Registered Nurses complete a structured falls-risk assessment in the home, coordinate any medication changes with the GP, and train support workers to spot and reduce hazards day to day. It’s practical, clinical, and built around the person.
